What Does Creativity Look Like Beyond Traditional Art?

When we hear the word creativity, many of us picture an artist standing before a canvas, a musician composing a melody, or a writer tapping away at a novel. These traditional forms of artistic expression are certainly powerful representations of creativity, but they’re only part of the picture. Creativity is far broader than the boundaries of the arts. It’s not just about producing a beautiful painting or writing a best-selling book. At its core, creativity is about seeing the world in new ways, solving problems with fresh ideas, and expressing individuality in everyday life.

Think of creativity as a mindset rather than a skill reserved for a few. It’s about finding opportunities where others see routine, and transforming the ordinary into something meaningful or new. Rearranging your living room furniture for better energy and flow, inventing a unique meal from leftover ingredients, or navigating your neighbourhood in a new way, these are all examples of creativity in action. They may not seem artistic, but they involve experimentation, imagination, and personal expression.

Understanding creativity this way helps us realize that everyone, regardless of their background or training, has creative potential. You don’t need to be a “creative professional” to think creatively. It’s an innate human ability, one that can be nurtured and applied in virtually every corner of life. Whether you’re figuring out how to organize your calendar, explain a complex concept to a co-worker, or even plan a memorable weekend trip, creative thinking is what makes these moments more engaging and effective.

Recognizing these everyday acts as creative endeavors makes the concept of creativity feel more inclusive and less intimidating. It frees us from the pressure of producing something perfect or artistic and instead allows us to play, experiment, and solve problems in original ways.

How Simple Habits Can Spark Creative Thinking

So, how can we tap into our everyday creativity more consistently? Often, it begins with simple, intentional habits that encourage imaginative thinking.

One such habit is mindfulness, the practice of being fully present in the moment. When we slow down and pay attention to our surroundings, we start noticing details that usually fade into the background: the way sunlight dances on the floor, the unique scent of the afternoon air, or the rhythmic sounds outside our window. These small observations can be surprisingly inspiring. They give our minds new material to work with and help us make connections we wouldn’t otherwise see.

Another key ingredient is curiosity. Asking “Why is it done this way?” or “What if I tried this differently?” opens doors to exploration and discovery. Curiosity encourages us to challenge assumptions and imagine alternative possibilities, fundamental steps in the creative process.

Journaling is another powerful tool. It doesn’t have to be a detailed diary. Even a few minutes of free writing, capturing random thoughts, questions, or ideas, can help clear mental clutter and reveal insights hiding just below the surface. It’s a judgment-free space for experimentation and reflection, often leading to unexpected ideas.

Engaging in playful activities also boosts creativity. This could be doodling during a meeting, building something with your hands, or experimenting with sounds or colors. These moments of unstructured play loosen up our thinking, allowing fresh ideas to surface more easily.

These small habits don’t require a big time commitment or special talent. But over time, they build a mental environment where creativity thrives.

Finding Creativity in Everyday Tasks

One of the most empowering realizations is that everyday life is full of opportunities for creative expression — if we choose to see them that way.

Take cooking, for example. Yes, following a recipe is a useful skill. But the real creative magic happens when you veer off-script, substituting ingredients, mixing unexpected flavours, or creating something entirely new based on what’s in your pantry. It’s about experimentation and intuition just as much as it’s about precision.

Or consider organizing your home or workspace. It’s not just about putting things away, it can be an act of design. How can you arrange your environment to feel more welcoming, more functional, more you? When you start thinking about flow, comfort, or even the colours and textures that make you feel energized, you’re engaging in creative problem-solving.

Creativity in problem-solving is especially valuable in both home and work contexts. Imagine something in your house breaks. Instead of throwing it out, could it be repurposed? Fixed in an unconventional way? Or let’s say a work process feels inefficient. Rather than sticking to the same method, what if you questioned the usual approach and invited others to brainstorm alternatives?

These everyday moments are ripe for creative thinking. By approaching them with curiosity and a willingness to explore, we uncover not just solutions, but also personal satisfaction and joy.

The Importance of Sharing and Learning in Creative Growth

Creativity doesn’t live in isolation. While it’s deeply personal, it also grows stronger when shared and enriched through connection with others.

Sharing your creative work, whether it’s a new recipe, a thoughtful blog post, a clever DIY solution, or just an idea, opens the door to feedback, collaboration, and inspiration. Others might see your work differently, suggest new directions, or help refine your approach. Even just the act of showing what you’ve created can be affirming and motivating. It reminds you that your ideas have value and that they’re worth exploring further.

At the same time, staying creatively inspired means continuing to learn. This doesn’t require going back to school or taking formal classes (though those can be valuable too). It can be as simple as reading a book on a subject you know little about, watching a documentary that challenges your perspective, or trying a new hobby just for fun.

Exposing yourself to different cultures, disciplines, and viewpoints expands your mental toolkit. You start seeing connections across fields, like how a science concept might inform your gardening, or how photography techniques might inspire your approach to storytelling. These cross-pollinations are where some of the richest creative insights come from.

Creativity is a journey, not a destination. And by continuously learning, sharing, and staying open to inspiration, you keep that journey fresh, meaningful, and endlessly evolving.

Redefining What It Means to Be Creative

Creativity isn’t just the domain of artists, it’s a way of engaging with the world. It’s about bringing imagination, resourcefulness, and personal flair to all areas of life, from cooking and problem-solving to conversation and self-reflection.

When we move past the idea that creativity must look a certain way or result in a finished product, we open ourselves up to countless opportunities for growth, joy, and connection. Whether through mindful observation, playful exploration, thoughtful problem-solving, or shared learning, we all have the ability to live more creatively.

So the next time you find yourself doing something routine, ask: Is there a new way I could approach this? That simple question might just lead you somewhere surprising, and spark your next creative breakthrough.

Showcasing the Northumberland & the LVEP Programme

Last summer, KG Photography had the privilege of working with the Local Visitor Economy Partnership LVEP Programme to create a series of images highlighting the beauty and character of the North East, particularly in stunning Northumberland. This initiative is part of a broader movement led by VisitEngland to transform how England’s visitor economy is structured and supported.

What is the LVEP Programme?

The LVEP Programme is a national framework developed by VisitEngland to reshape England’s tourism landscape. By bringing together public and private stakeholders under a unified vision, LVEPs aim to foster stronger local leadership, better planning, and more effective destination management across the country.

Recognised by VisitEngland, these partnerships are built on collaboration, locally, regionally, and nationally, working towards shared goals that support sustainable tourism, economic development, and improved visitor experiences.

Why It Matters

Through our involvement with the programme, we saw firsthand how impactful this initiative can be, not just for tourism businesses, but also for communities and visitors. LVEPs aren’t just about tourism promotion; they’re about creating long-term, meaningful change in how destinations grow, market themselves, and serve both residents and visitors.

The Five Pillars of the LVEP Programme

Here’s a quick overview of the key goals driving the initiative:

Strategy
Building strong connections between LVEPs, VisitEngland, government departments, and national agencies to align efforts across the board.

Stability
Fostering resilience through diverse funding models, improved income generation, and inclusive governance structures.

Growth
Aligning local and national priorities to encourage sustainable, inclusive growth and performance-driven planning.

Place-Shaping
Contributing to the development of places in ways that benefit visitors, communities, businesses, and the environment—especially through partnerships with local authorities.

Training
Supporting skills development within LVEP teams and the wider sector, especially SMEs, through tailored training and business support.

National Impact, Local Roots

LVEPs are already making a difference in destinations like North Yorkshire and the Peak District & Derbyshire. In May 2025, three new partnerships joined the programme, Dorset, Wiltshire, and Hampshire, as well as Portsmouth & Southampton, expanding the network of high-performing regions.

In the North East and West Midlands, Destination Development Partnership (DDP) pilots are underway, testing the long-term impact of the LVEP model and helping to make the case for future investment.

Looking Ahead

As the tourism industry continues to recover and evolve, the LVEP Programme represents a forward-thinking approach to destination management. It’s about more than just attracting visitors, it’s about creating a sustainable, inclusive, and well-supported visitor economy that works for everyone involved.

We’re proud to have contributed to the programme and to have showcased the natural and cultural treasures of Northumberland as part of this national vision.

For more information about working with KG Photography visit their website or give them a call on 07710 799598. With more than 25 years plus years experience in photography in the North East, London, the UK and overseas, KG Photography are the go-to photographers for businesses, agencies, brands and publications with regional, national and international reach.

In addition to their commercial, food, corporate, product and packaging, advertising and PR photography for national and international brands and agencies, Kevin and Nicky’s work appears regularly in regional and national magazines, a host of other publications, and on everything from digital platforms like JustEat, to billboard campaigns seen by millions of people from around the world.

Transform Leith’s Quality Yard “Painting with Pals” Street Art Event

If you’ve ever dreamed of seeing your artwork splashed across a wall in bold colour, now’s your chance. As part of this year’s Leith Festival, local artists are being invited to take part in an exciting outdoor mural event: Painting with Pals.

Happening on Friday, 14 June, Painting with Pals is an inclusive, community-driven event hosted by Quality Yard, a creative studio tucked away on Maritime Lane in Leith. The event offers a rare opportunity for both seasoned artists and complete newcomers to collaborate and leave their mark on the studio’s iconic 360° mural.

A Living, Breathing Canvas

The mural that wraps around Quality Yard has been a fixture of the Leith art scene since its launch during the 2018 Leith Festival. What began as a project contained within the studio’s 40-metre inner courtyard has gradually spilled out onto the surrounding doors and boards of Maritime Lane, transforming the area into a vibrant public gallery.

Now, in 2024, the wall is ready for a fresh coat of creativity, and the team at Quality Yard wants you to be part of it.

Painting with Pals: Street Art for Everyone

The name says it all. Painting with Pals encourages artists to apply as pairs, whether you’re two friends looking to experiment with murals, or a seasoned artist teaming up with someone new to the game. All ages and experience levels are welcome.

“This event is about community, creativity, and collaboration,” says David Organ, founder of Quality Yard. “It’s as much for professional painters as it is for people who just want to give large-scale artwork a go for the first time.”

The event serves as a kind of “unofficial street art festival,” inviting participating duos to each take on a section of Quality Yard’s 18th-century wall. All walls will be prepped with a neutral grey background, and artists will have access to basic emulsion paints and a limited range of spray paints to bring their vision to life.

A Platform for Local Talent

While past editions of Painting with Pals have spotlighted women and LGBT+ artists, this year the focus shifts to highlighting local talent from Leith and Edinburgh.

“I’ve seen what’s happening with the street art scene in Glasgow—especially at the Yardworks Festival,” says David. “There’s incredible energy there, and I’d love to see more of that spirit here in Leith. This is about giving local artists a space to shine.”

That said, the event remains rooted in inclusivity. As a Scottish LGBTI+ Rainbow Mark Venue, Quality Yard is committed to maintaining a safe, welcoming space for all creatives. The open call process is a deliberate effort to make the opportunity as accessible and diverse as possible.

How to Apply

If you’re interested in being part of this vibrant community event, it’s simple to apply. Artists can reach out via email at <span
                data-original-string='miMA2kHr0aY0KSmpmpHpzw==20bcawevewCQK0R0t1kT7VftTUhZQQXdlQ/zVi5qAGx41I='

You’ll need to include some examples of your artwork, whether that’s a link to your Instagram profile, personal website, or JPEGs sent via email. Don’t worry about scale; mural experience isn’t necessary. What matters most is your enthusiasm and your willingness to collaborate.

Why You Should Join

Beyond the chance to display your art in a high-profile, public-facing location, Painting with Pals is an invitation to connect, with other artists, with the local community, and with the growing street art culture in Edinburgh.

This is a chance to be part of something lasting, vibrant, and meaningful. Whether you’ve been painting for decades or just picked up your first brush, this event is about bringing people together through creativity.

So, grab a friend, gather your ideas, and get ready to paint. The walls of Leith are calling.

Films made with the help of artificial intelligence (AI)

Films made with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) will be able to win top awards at the Oscars, according to its organisers.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences issued new rules on Monday which said the use of AI and other digital tools would “neither help nor harm the chances of achieving a nomination”.

Generative AI – which can create text, images, audio and video in response to simple text prompts – helped to produce some of the films awarded top industry accolades in March.

But the Academy said it would still consider human involvement when selecting its winners.

The Academy said its new language around eligibility for films made using generative AI tools was recommended by its Science and Technology Council.

Under further rule changes announced on Monday, Academy members must now watch all nominated films in each category in order to be able to take part in the final round of voting, which decides upon winners.

The use of AI in film became a hot topic after Adrian Brody took home the award for Best Actor for his role in The Brutalist at this year’s Oscars ceremony in March.

The movie used generative AI to improve the actor’s accent when he spoke Hungarian.

It then emerged similar voice-cloning technology was used to enhance singing voices in the Oscar-winning musical Emilia Perez.

The technology’s ability to quickly alter or match the tone and style of an artist, or perform edits such as subtly changing someone’s appearance, has helped it become more popular in the production of music and film.

But AI use remains controversial, and artists and actors have voiced concerns over the material used to train such tools and its impact upon their livelihoods.

Concerns and limitations

Actors and screenwriters previously highlighted fears about losing work to AI during the 2023 strikes in Hollywood.

“If you can take my face, my body and my voice and make me say or do something that I had no choice about, that’s not a good thing,” actress Susan Sarandon told the BBC from a picket line.

And screenwriters are concerned studios would seek to cut costs and save time by using tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT for tasks such as researching, treatment and script writing, instead of humans.

Safeguards around the use of AI were established as part of the agreements reached between unions and studios that marked the end of the strikes.

But while some actors have seemingly embraced the technology, others, such as Scarlett Johansson, have issued warnings about its potential to allow abuse of their image or likeness.

Animators told the BBC in 2024 generative AI tools were not yet good enough to be able to replicate the quality of their work – certainly not to an award-winning standard.

“It’s like having a bad writer help you,” said Jonathan Kendrick, co-founder and chairman of global streaming service Rokit Flix. “Sure it will get an outline done, but if you need something with emotional weight, an AI isn’t going to get you an Oscar.”
